The Fort Collins Museum presents the new exhibit
"Rock This Town: a new spin on the geologic record" opening February 2
in the Main Gallery. While geology builds the bedrock upon which life
rests, rhythm and soul make life dance. The museum will celebrate this
unique exhibit with an Opening Reception, featuring Kenny Cordova and
the Olde Rock Band, on February 2 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the Fort
Collins Museum
"Rock This Town" plays on the themes of geology and
music, exploring connections beyond the phrase “rock and roll.”
Visitors enter the “Hall of Rock” to discover how the sedimentary is
anything but sedentary, what igneous layering has to do with ingenious
lyricizing, and how the metamorphic might just change minds about what
science and art have in common.

The "Rock This Town" exhibit features examples from
the museum’s geology collection that have been categorized musically,
such as Hard and Soft Rock, Classic Rock, Punk Rock, and The Blues. For
example, the Hard Rock Station features rocks and minerals that are
classified on the Mohs’ Scale as hard, and include Beryl, Quartz and
Tourmaline. Visitors may also choose to listen to examples of hard rock
music on an MP3 player provided at the station. Selected songs by
Aerosmith, Van Halen, Ted Nugent and others provide an interesting, if
unexpected, connection to the rocks and minerals on display. Vintage
album covers and topographic maps lining the gallery walls offer visual
interest and opportunities for conversations about music and geology.
The “Tune into Minerals” station offers an opportunity to conduct
geologic tests on different minerals, including hardness, luster,
streaking and magnetism. Additional educational programs, including
Lapidary (polishing) demonstrations, a Junior Geologist program, and
lectures will be provided during the year. Call the Museum for more
information about related programs. |

And of course, visitors can listen to the music
selections and debate their “classifications.” Museum Assistant
Director Brent Carmack explains, “This exhibit has been really fun
to work on. Creating new ‘classifications’ for our geology
collection based on rock and roll genres has led to many spirited
discussions, emphasizing how musical tastes are extremely personal.
Hopefully this exhibit will generate a lot of discussion among our
visitors about how they would have classified our collection…or why
we didn’t include Journey in our classic rock genre.”
The Opening Reception will be Friday, February 2 from 5:00 to 7:00
PM at the Fort Collins Museum. Refreshments and great music by Kenny
Cordova and the Olde Rock Band will make this Opening Reception one
not to be missed. As blues diva Koko Taylor would say, we're gonna
pitch a wang dang doodle!
