Red Feather Lakes, Colorado
FEATURES
Red Feather Lakes Colorado is located 60 miles West of Ft Collins. It is reached by going Northwest on US 287 and then West up highway 74E. The 2000 census stated a population of 552. This mountain community started as a summer recreation and summer cabin retreat from the heat of the plains center but now has evolved into a community of full time inhabitants.
It is at an altitude of 8200 ft. The area was first inhabited by Native Americans who might of used the lakes as a summer resort, just like the people of today. There was plenty of game and mild weather prevails in the summer.
In 1900 or so along came the ranchers and loggers and a few homesteaders. These homesteads are still visible as almost disappeared ruins. Now there is a rustic little village of stores, lodges, guest ranches, restaurants and many diverse outdoor activities.
It is surrounded by 612,000 acres of national forests. This area has fishing, snowmobiling, hiking and horseback riding to name a few. The Red Feather Lakes is also home to the Fox Hill Golf Club and the Shambhala Mountain Center, a Buddhist retreat.
The climate is moderate with 300+ days of sunshine a year.
